Prem Lall, the daughter of Karam Chand Thapar (a well-known industrialist), was married to my mother’s first cousin, Surendra, who was affectionately called ‘Bandy’. My mother introduced the couple to Babaji and Prem—whom I called ‘Aunty’—became quite devoted to him. Babaji dubbed her ‘Musalmani’. She couldn’t figure out why and grumbled to `Vimla behen-ji (sister)’ about it. That didn’t stop her from bringing her daughter, Nonita, to meet Babaji.

Nonita was a golfer, regarded by many as a budding champion. He instructed Prem Aunty to get Nonita’s mundan (tonsure) done. My mother expostulated, ‘Babaji, what have you done?’

He told her, ‘Mother, don’t worry. Now she will play even better.’

Thereafter, Nonita was unstoppable. She’s been a champion many times over and a recipient of the prestigious Arjuna award.

Many years later, Prem Aunty told me she had finally understood why Babaji called her ‘Musalmani’. Both her daughters had found Muslim husbands and changed their names accordingly. Nonita married the Pakistani golfer, Faisal Qureshi, while her sister Naina, who became country head and general manager of HSBC, married Rashid K. Kidwai, CEO of the Grassroots Trading Network.
